Gujarat Bureaucrat Researches Sardar Patel for Statue Project
Gujarat Confidential: Research Ready · indianexpress.com

A man named Sanjay Joshi, who worked on a big project to build a very tall statue called the Statue of Unity, had to do a lot of research about a famous leader named Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

He had to learn everything he could about Patel because the statue was going to be built in a tricky place, right in the middle of a river.

The road to the place was also very narrow.

Joshi had to make sure the statue looked like a real person.

He even became like a doctor in learning about Patel because he studied so much.

Quotes

Sanjay Joshi

Gujarat Cadre bureaucrat and former chief manager of the Statue of Unity Project

“The biggest challenge was how to construct such a tall structure and it should look like a living person… and right in the centre of the river. Such a location was never selected, added with the challenge that the road leading to this place was hardly 12 to 15 feet… This is before 2013. But the bigger challenge, looking at the political conditions – was the content available on Sardar Patel. Because we had to be ready. So I thought to let me research myself. And that is how, being a civil servant, I ended up as a ‘doctorate’ on Sardar Patel”
