NC Expels Kargil Leader Over Power Dispute
The National Conference (NC) in Kargil has expelled one of its senior leaders, Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, for six years.
Dr. Akhoon, who was the Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, was removed from the party for not following the rules.
The NC and Congress had an agreement to share power, where the CEC position would switch between them every 2.5 years.
Dr. Akhoon was supposed to step down on April 18 this year, but he refused.
He said there was a special situation in Ladakh that needed him to stay.
The Congress then tried to remove him by moving a no-confidence motion, but Dr. Akhoon got support from other parties and independents to pass the budget.
The NC leadership saw this as a betrayal and expelled him.
This shows a big fight within the NC in Kargil.
Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, the Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC, Kargil, was expelled from the National Conference (NC) for six years.
The expulsion was due to Akhoon's refusal to step down from the CEC position as per the rotational power-sharing agreement with the Congress.
Akhoon cited an 'extraordinary situation' in Ladakh as the reason for not vacating the chair.
The Congress moved a no-confidence motion against Akhoon, backed by dissident NC members, but Akhoon secured support from BJP councillors and others to pass the budget.
The NC leadership viewed Akhoon's actions as anti-party activities and a violation of party discipline, leading to his expulsion.
