Delaware joins US states declaring August 15 'India Day'

August 15 is India's Independence Day, a day when India celebrates becoming an independent country.

Many people of Indian heritage live in the United States today.

Some American states make special announcements, called proclamations, to celebrate this day.

Delaware is the newest state to do this, declaring August 15, 2026 as 'India Day'.

New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts have made similar announcements.

The governors say Indian Americans have helped their states through work, leadership and community service.

On August 15, people hold flag-hoisting ceremonies at Indian embassies and consulates.

There are also parades, cultural performances and special events.

Famous buildings like the Empire State Building and the Space Needle light up in the colours of the Indian flag.

The day honours India's independence and the heritage of Indian Americans.
