Delhi SIR Forces Voters to Re‑prove 2002 Identities
Delhi is doing a big check of its voter list.
They want people who joined after 2002 to show the old ID they had in 2002.
A 65‑year‑old widow named Geeta had to go back to her home, get her old card, and show it to a worker named Mukesh.
Mukesh asked her for the 2002 ID, which made her confused because she didn’t remember it.
Many people in Delhi, especially those who move a lot, don’t have those old cards.
The check could delete a lot of names from the list.
Some politicians say the work is not done right, while others say people will still submit their forms before the deadline.
The workers have to visit houses many times and fill out forms for people who can’t do it themselves.
Delhi’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is asking voters who enrolled after 2002 to provide 2002 voter ID proof.
Assistant BLO Mukesh Chand Meena in Sangam Vihar requested a 65‑year‑old widow’s 2002 ID, sparking confusion among many migrants.
The SIR has already led to over 150,000 exclusions in South Delhi, with officials estimating 30‑40% of names may be deleted.
The exercise has become a political flashpoint, with the AAP accusing the BJP of overstating form distribution and the BJP arguing many voters will submit forms before the August 8 deadline.
Ground workers report that many voters lack old documents, are reluctant to travel to offices, and that the process requires multiple visits and manual form filling.
