Hasina Faces Arrest on Return, Law Minister Warns
Sheikh Hasina, the former leader of Bangladesh, is living in India after her government was overthrown in 2024.
She said she wants to come back to Bangladesh by December, even though she fears for her life.
The Bangladesh law minister, M Asaduzzaman, said that if she returns, she will be arrested right away and won’t get a chance to surrender to a court.
Bangladesh has asked India to hand her over, and India says it is looking into the request.
Human rights groups say the trial that gave her the death sentence was unfair and flawed.
Bangladesh law minister M Asaduzzaman warned that Sheikh Hasina would be arrested immediately upon returning from India.
Hasina, sentenced to death in absentia in November 2025, said she plans to return by December despite fearing for her life.
The interim government that took power after the 2024 student protests revoked Hasina’s passport and banned her party, Awami League.
Bangladesh has requested India to extradite Hasina; New Delhi says the request is under legal consideration.
Human rights groups have called the trial and conviction “flawed” and questioned its fairness.
