IIT-Guwahati researchers develop low-cost catalyst for cleaner hydrogen production

Scientists at IIT Guwahati have made a special helper that can split water into hydrogen.

Hydrogen is a clean fuel that many people want to use for energy.

When hydrogen is used, the main thing left behind is water.

But today, most hydrogen comes from dirty fossil fuels like natural gas and coal.

Making it that way releases greenhouse gases, which are bad for the planet.

Splitting water needs a helper called a catalyst to work quickly.

The best helpers are very expensive because they use rare metals.

The new catalyst uses cheap nickel instead, so it costs much less.

It uses almost 88 per cent of the electrical energy to split the water, and it stays stable for a long time.

This could help India make cleaner hydrogen for its Green Hydrogen Mission.
