EPS-95 Pension Hike Delayed
Many retired workers in India receive a small pension called EPS-95.
They have been asking the government to increase this pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 7,500 per month, along with other benefits like dearness allowance and free medical care.
The government has not yet agreed to this increase.
They say the pension fund does not have enough money to make such a big increase.
The fund is supported by both employers and the government, but it is not enough to cover the higher pension amounts.
The government has also been working on following court orders related to pension calculations, but they have not set a date for when the pension increase might happen.
Many retired workers are still waiting for a decision.
EPS-95 pensioners are demanding a minimum monthly pension of Rs 7,500, up from the current Rs 1,000.
The government has not yet accepted the demand, citing an actuarial deficit in the Employees’ Pension Fund.
The fund is supported by employer contributions (8.33% of wages) and government budgetary support (1.16% of wages up to Rs 15,000 per month).
The government has provided additional budgetary support to ensure the current minimum pension of Rs 1,000.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has processed nearly 99% of applications related to pension fixation as per Supreme Court directions.
