Karnataka Plans Revival of 500 Lakes, but Health Requires More

Karnataka wants to improve 500 lakes in seven districts.

The plan includes removing built-up silt and repairing the banks and water channels.

But fixing the visible parts of a lake may not make it healthy.

Dirty wastewater can still flow in and harm the lake.

Researchers say wastewater should be treated and wetlands and native plants should be protected.

A healthy lake should also have enough oxygen and support plants and animals.

At Venkateshpura Lake, a restoration project was followed by more dissolved oxygen and the return of some birds.

The rains will help show how well the lakes are functioning.
