Delhi HC: Cricket Betting Profits Are Proceeds of Crime
The Delhi High Court has said that money made from illegal cricket betting is considered 'dirty money' under the law.
This is because the money comes from illegal activities, and even if it's used for something else, it's still considered illegal.
The court was looking at a big case where people were betting on cricket through a website called Betfair.com.
The court said that the people who were involved in this illegal betting can't just say that the money they made is clean because it came from illegal activities.
The court also said that the government agency that was investigating this case had enough proof to show that these people were involved in illegal activities.
Delhi High Court ruled that profits from cricket betting are 'proceeds of crime' under the PMLA.
The court dismissed petitions challenging provisional attachment orders (PAOs) issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The case involves an alleged Rs 2,400 crore international cricket betting racket from 2015.
The ED attached properties worth approximately Rs 20 crore and issued a show-cause notice for money laundering.
The court held that the taint of criminal activity persists throughout the use of such proceeds, even if the downstream activity is not a scheduled offence.
