NBFCs Account for 47% of India's New Consumer Borrowers
A report from FIDC and TransUnion CIBIL says NBFCs provide a large share of new consumer loans in India.
In June 2026, they accounted for 47% of loans to people entering formal credit for the first time.
Their credit-active customer base has grown nearly sevenfold over the past decade.
NBFCs are especially active in loans of up to ₹2 lakh.
Their customers increasingly include people from semi-urban and rural areas.
The report also says NBFCs are lending to more people who already have credit histories.
The articles give different comparison periods for the decline in first-time borrowers, so that timing is unclear.
The report found a larger share of above-prime customers and lower serious delinquency from 2019 to 2026.
TransUnion CIBIL's chief said NBFCs should build longer relationships as customers' needs change.
A joint FIDC-TransUnion CIBIL report says NBFCs accounted for 47% of new-to-credit consumer originations in June 2026.
Over the past decade, NBFCs' credit-active consumer base grew nearly sevenfold, while their share of retail loan originations rose from 33% to 43%.
Loans up to ₹2 lakh represented 82% of consumer-credit originations by volume; NBFCs accounted for 47% of this lending, compared with banks' 17%.
The report says the semi-urban and rural share of NBFC consumers rose from 31% in June 2016 to 59% in June 2026.
Above-prime consumers' share of NBFC portfolios increased from 24% to 32% between June 2019 and June 2026, while 90-plus-day delinquency fell from 2.7% to 1.1%.
