Punjab groundwater contamination declared public health emergency
A politician in India's Parliament has warned about a serious problem with the water in Punjab, a state in India.
The water has too much uranium, nitrate, and fluoride, which can make people sick.
The politician says this is a big emergency because more than half of the water samples have too much uranium, which can cause cancer and kidney diseases.
The water is also making the land less fertile, which is bad for farming.
The politician wants the government to do something about it, like providing clean water and checking people's health.
The problem is very bad in two districts, Sangrur and Bathinda, where the uranium levels are very high.
Punjab's groundwater contamination declared a public health emergency due to high levels of uranium, nitrate, and fluoride.
62.5% of water samples in Punjab exceed the safe limit for uranium, the highest rate in India.
14.6% of samples have excessive nitrate, and 11% have excessive fluoride, posing health risks like cancer, kidney diseases, and bone diseases.
16 out of 23 districts in Punjab are contaminated, with Sangrur and Bathinda recording uranium concentrations over 200 ppb.
The contamination threatens agriculture due to residual sodium carbonate and increasing salinity in 25% of samples.
