Assam CM Claims 40% Muslim Population Due to Infiltration
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said that the Muslim population in his state has grown to 40% because of people coming in from Bangladesh.
He thinks this has been happening slowly but steadily since the 1960s.
He explained that the Muslim population was 34% in 2011 and has been increasing by 4% every year.
He also said that even if the number of people coming in has decreased in the last 10 years, the Muslim population is still around 39-40%.
He believes this is a big problem because the native people of Assam are becoming a minority.
The Supreme Court has also said that Assam is facing a demographic invasion.
The Chief Minister blames this influx for Assam not becoming a developed state after Independence.
He also mentioned that the people who have come to Assam are having many children, which is adding to the population growth.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claims the Muslim population in Assam has grown to 40% due to infiltration from Bangladesh.
The Muslim population was 34% in the 2011 census and has been increasing by 4% annually, according to Sarma's calculations.
Sarma attributes the demographic change to continuous infiltration since the 1960s and natural population growth of settled migrants.
He believes that even with a reduction in infiltration in the last decade, the Muslim population is still around 39-40%.
The Supreme Court has recognized Assam as facing a demographic invasion due to infiltration.
