Allahabad High Court Questions ‘Andolanjeevi’ in Journalist’s NSA Detention

Allahabad High Court Questions ‘Andolanjeevi’ in Journalist’s NSA Detention

Journalist Satyam Verma is asking the Allahabad High Court to overturn his detention under a law called the National Security Act.

The case is connected to workers’ protests that turned violent in Noida in April.

The official detention papers called him an “andolanjeevi,” a term often used for someone seen as a professional protester.

The judges asked why that word and details about Verma’s beliefs, books and organisation were used as reasons to detain him.

Authorities alleged that he helped cause unrest, while Verma’s petition disputes the case against him.

It says, among other things, that he was in Lucknow during the protests and was not named in the cited police reports.

The court has not yet decided his case.

Its questions during the hearing were not a final ruling.
