Srinagar's Waste Management Plan for 2030
Srinagar, a city in India, is growing fast with more people moving in and tourism increasing.
This means more waste is being produced, and the city's old landfill site, Achan, is full of garbage.
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has a plan to clean up this waste in a scientific way.
They will use special machines to sort and treat the waste, turning it into useful things like fuel and compost.
They will also make sure to properly handle any dangerous waste and reduce the bad smell.
The SMC will keep track of the progress and make sure everything is done according to the rules.
This plan aims to make the city cleaner and more pleasant for everyone who lives there.
Srinagar's waste production has increased from 238 tonnes per day in 2012 to 525 tonnes per day currently, with an expected rise to 800 tonnes per day by 2030.
The Achan landfill site, established in the 1980s, contains over 11 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste, posing environmental and health concerns.
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has formulated a plan to scientifically treat and dispose of the legacy waste at Achan, aiming to process 30,000 metric tonnes per month for 30 months.
The waste treatment process will involve the use of machinery like trommels, conveyors, and magnetic separators to produce by-products such as RDF, recyclables, enriched soil, and compost.
The SMC will follow strict regulations and guidelines, including the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, to ensure the proper handling of waste, including biomedical and hazardous waste, and to control odour and leachate.
