Ladakh Domicile Policy: 15-Year Stay Required, Job Reservations
The government is making new rules about who can be considered a local in Ladakh.
People who have lived there since 2019 for 15 years in a row will be seen as locals, which matters for getting government jobs.
This is because locals want to make sure people from other places don't take their jobs.
A few jobs are set aside for certain groups of people.
The government is talking to local leaders to finalize these rules.
A new domicile policy for Ladakh is under consideration by the Union Government.
Citizens with 15 years of continuous residency in Ladakh, starting from 2019, will be considered domiciles.
The definition of domicile is crucial for eligibility to apply for 5% of gazetted government vacancies.
80% of vacancies are reserved for Scheduled Tribes, among other categories.
The policy follows talks between civil society leaders and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
