CNG struggles in two-wheelers despite car success
CNG is becoming popular in cars because it's cheaper to run and has good range.
But in two-wheelers, it's not doing well.
The Bajaj Freedom 125, the first CNG motorcycle, sold a lot at first but then sales dropped a lot.
This is because the CNG tank takes up space, so the bike doesn't go far on either CNG or petrol.
Also, electric bikes are more convenient because you can charge them at home.
Experts say CNG might still be useful for some people, but electric bikes are becoming more popular.
CNG captured 21.7% of passenger vehicle sales in FY26, driven by models from Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai.
Bajaj Auto's Freedom 125 CNG motorcycle saw initial success but sales dropped by 76% in FY26.
The Freedom 125's CNG cylinder reduces petrol tank space, limiting range and convenience.
Electric two-wheelers from Hero MotoCorp and TVS are gaining popularity due to home charging convenience.
Industry experts suggest that CNG, electric, and petrol powertrains will coexist, each serving different customer needs.
