French and English Companies Clash for Control of Cuddalore

In the 1740s, French and English trading companies were fighting for power in southern India.

The French leader, Joseph Dupleix, wanted to capture the English fort at Cuddalore.

His soldiers moved very slowly because roads and waterways had to be repaired.

After three days, they had traveled only about seven kilometres.

Then six English ships appeared at sea.

Dupleix decided that attacking was too dangerous and ordered his army to return.

The ships also brought Major Stringer Lawrence, who helped strengthen the English side.

Ordinary Indians suffered because the fighting caused food shortages, forced grain collections, and violence.

These events were part of the larger rivalry later known as the Carnatic Wars.
