Mexico Reports Second Screwworm Case in Two Days
Mexico has found two cases of a harmful parasite called the New World screwworm in just two days.
The first case was in a baby cow in the state of Tamaulipas, and the second case was in a goat near Mexico City.
This parasite can hurt animals by laying eggs in their wounds, and the larvae eat the animal's flesh.
Mexico has been working hard to stop the spread of this parasite, which has already affected many animals.
The U.S. has also been worried because this parasite could hurt their livestock and economy.
So far, there are 13,106 reported cases, with 671 still active.
The states with the most cases are Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Yucatan.
The U.S. has kept its border closed to Mexican livestock to prevent the parasite from spreading.
Mexico reported a second case of the New World screwworm parasite in two days, one in a cow calf in Tamaulipas and another in a goat in the State of Mexico.
The parasite has caused 13,106 cases since November 2024, with 671 currently active.
The outbreak has led to the closure of the U.S.-Mexico border to Mexican livestock since May 2025.
The parasite threatens $1.8 billion in potential damage to Texas' economy alone.
The most affected states in Mexico are Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Yucatan.
