Canada's Study Permit Rejection Rate for Indians Skyrockets
Canada has made it much harder for students from India to get permission to study there.
This August, almost 74% of Indian students were rejected, which is much higher than the 32% rejection rate in August 2023.
Because of this, far fewer Indian students are applying to Canada now.
Canada says it's doing this to stop people from using fake documents and to control the number of people coming to live there temporarily.
However, the Indian Embassy believes that Indian students are high-quality and have been good for Canadian schools.
This situation is also happening while Canada and India have tense relations.
Some Canadian universities are already seeing many fewer Indian students, and the dream of studying and working in Canada seems to be fading for many.
Canada's study permit rejection rate for Indian applicants surged to 74% in August 2025, up from 32% in August 2023.
The number of Indian students applying for permits has significantly decreased, from 20,900 in August 2023 to 4,515 in August 2025.
Canada attributes the increased rejections to a crackdown on fraudulent activities, including fake acceptance letters, and a broader effort to reduce temporary migration.
The strained diplomatic ties between Canada and India may be contributing to the stricter visa policies affecting Indian students.
Canadian universities are experiencing declining enrollments of Indian students, with some reporting a drop of nearly two-thirds.
