GDP Base Revision Debate Should Not Obscure India’s Growth

India changed the way it measures the size of its economy by using a newer base year.

This also changed some older GDP numbers.

Some people compared a new current number with an old previous number and calculated growth of only 2.6%.

The article says this is not a fair comparison because the two numbers were calculated differently.

Using figures from the same series gives nominal growth of about 9.7%.

The official real GDP growth for the quarter was 7.8%.

Other indicators, such as tax collections, vehicle sales, factory output and exports, also showed growth.

The article argues that the controversy comes from mixing different versions of the data rather than from evidence of very weak economic activity.
