ED freezes Rs 4 crore deposits of retired PSIEC officers
In India, there is a special police agency called the Enforcement Directorate that looks into money crimes.
It is investigating two retired officers who used to work for a company called PSIEC in Punjab.
PSIEC gives out industrial plots, which are pieces of land where factories can be built.
The officers were in charge of deciding who got the plots.
The agency says the officers secretly gave the plots to their relatives, friends, and other people they knew.
To hide this, people used fake company names and fake addresses when asking for the land.
The agency believes the officers received big bribes, or secret payments, for doing this.
Some of the land was later sold to other people at high market prices, and some was used for homes and shops instead of factories.
The agency searched the officers and found cash that was not recorded.
It also froze, or locked, their bank accounts, which held about four crore rupees in total.
The Enforcement Directorate froze bank deposits worth Rs 4.01 crore belonging to two retired PSIEC officials.
Unaccounted cash worth Rs 12.15 lakh was seized during searches conducted against the officials last week.
Former chief general manager Surinder Pal Singh and former general manager Jaswinder Singh Randhawa are accused of illegal industrial plot allotments.
The ED alleged plots were allotted to relatives, friends and associates using fake firms and fake addresses in exchange for 'huge' bribes.
Industrial plots were allegedly diverted for residential/commercial use and sold at market rates through shell entities.
