Tea Workers Protest Contract Violations, Reopening on Hold
Workers at the Ambari tea estate in Jalpaiguri are very upset.
Their garden has been closed since December 2, 2025, and they have been without jobs.
Last year, they signed an agreement with the management to reopen the garden, but the workers say the management did not follow the rules.
They were fired without good reasons, and their work became much harder.
So, the workers protested by burning a copy of the agreement.
They want a new agreement before the garden can reopen.
Many other tea gardens in the area are also closed, and the workers are hoping the state will find new owners who will follow the rules.
Workers of the Ambari tea estate protested by burning a copy of the tripartite agreement with the management.
The garden has been closed since December 2, 2025, leaving 1,200 workers jobless.
Workers allege the management violated the agreement by terminating 14 workers and increasing workloads.
The state labour department is working to facilitate the reopening of the garden and other closed estates.
Several other tea estates in Jalpaiguri remain closed with no clear reopening date.
