Bengal Mandates Attendance After Medical College Deficiencies
The government in West Bengal is making sure doctors and staff at a Kolkata medical college are showing up for work by using a new attendance system.
This happened because the National Medical Commission (NMC) found some problems.
The NMC said that the college wasn't tracking attendance properly, and there were issues with exams and other data.
The NMC could fine the college a lot of money for these issues.
The college says some of the problems are due to technical issues.
Also, another medical college is in trouble for running a medical course without permission.
The West Bengal government mandated dual daily attendance using a facial recognition system at NRSMCH following a show-cause notice from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The NMC's notice cited eight deficiencies at NRSMCH, including insufficient data in the attendance system and discrepancies during examinations.
The NMC mentioned a potential monetary penalty of up to ₹1 crore per violation and stressed the possibility of more stringent actions.
The principal of NRSMCH attributed insufficient attendance data to "technical glitches" and cited manual attendance registers.
The NMC is taking legal action against Sanjiban Hospital and Medical College for allegedly running an unauthorized medical course.
