BRICS Leaders Eye Local-Currency Trade, Not Common Currency

BRICS leaders are meeting in New Delhi to discuss how their countries can rely less on the US dollar.

They are unlikely to create one shared BRICS currency soon.

Instead, they may try to use their own national currencies more often when trading with one another.

They could also connect their payment systems so money can move more easily across borders.

India prefers making payments cheaper and simpler rather than immediately creating a new currency.

India’s central bank has suggested linking the digital currencies used by BRICS countries.

Creating one common currency would be difficult because the countries have different economies and financial rules.

The likely result is more payment choices, not a replacement for the dollar overnight.
