Sunetra Pawar Sworn in as Maharashtra's First Woman Deputy CM
Sunetra Pawar, the wife of late NCP leader Ajit Pawar, has become the first woman to be sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
This happened just three days after her husband and four others died in a plane crash.
Sunetra Pawar was elected as the leader of the NCP legislature party and then took the oath in a ceremony attended by the state's Chief Minister and other leaders.
She will now take over some of the responsibilities her husband had, except for the Finance Ministry.
Sunetra Pawar has a background in environmental and social work and has been a Rajya Sabha MP.
There are also talks about merging the two factions of the NCP, but this has been put on hold due to Ajit Pawar's death.
Sunetra Pawar's net worth includes significant assets like jewellery and residential properties.
Sunetra Pawar was sworn in as Maharashtra's first woman Deputy Chief Minister on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
She was elected as the leader of the NCP legislature party earlier that day, replacing her late husband Ajit Pawar.
Sunetra Pawar is currently a Rajya Sabha MP and will need to become a member of the Maharashtra legislature within six months.
She will take over three of the four portfolios previously held by her husband, excluding the Finance Ministry.
The NCP merger talks, which were set to be announced on February 12, have been put on hold due to Ajit Pawar's death.
