Indian Banks Maintain Margins Amid Rate Cuts
Private banks in India are managing to keep their profit margins steady even after the central bank cut interest rates.
They are doing this by being careful with their deposits and loans.
For example, they are using more low-cost savings accounts and focusing on loans that don't change with interest rate cuts.
Some banks, like HDFC and Federal, are seeing small increases in their margins.
Others, like ICICI, are expecting their margins to stay the same.
ICICI Bank's profit fell slightly because of some extra costs, but analysts still like the stock because the CEO got a new term.
HDFC Bank's profit grew, and analysts think it could go up even more.
Federal Bank also did well, and its stock price went up because analysts think it will keep doing good in the future.
Experts think that banks will continue to protect their margins in the current quarter, but bigger improvements might happen next year.
Private banks expect net interest margins (NIMs) to remain resilient in Q4 FY26 despite RBI's 25 bps repo rate cut.
HDFC Bank's NIM expanded by 8 bps to 3.35% in Q3 FY26, with the full impact of the rate cut yet to be felt.
ICICI Bank's NIM remained unchanged at 4.3% in Q3 FY26, with cautious expectations for the future, and reported a 4% YoY profit decline due to one-off provisions.
RBL Bank's NIM rose to 4.63% in Q3 FY26, supported by a high proportion of fixed-rate loans.
Federal Bank reported a 12 bps sequential increase in NIM to 3.18%, driven by a better deposit mix and loan repricing, with a 9% YoY profit growth in Q3 FY26.
