Moutai Posts Slowest Growth as Chinese Cut Liquor Spending
Moutai, a famous Chinese liquor company, is seeing its slowest growth in years.
This is because people in China are buying less expensive alcohol due to economic worries and government rules about spending.
The wholesale price of their main liquor, Feitian, has gone down.
The government is also telling officials to spend less money on things like banquets, which hurts liquor sales.
Even though sales are slowing down, the company's profits are still pretty good because they sell their liquor to distributors at a set price.
Other smaller alcohol companies are struggling even more.
Experts don't expect things to get much better this year.
Kweichow Moutai's sales and profit growth are the slowest since at least 2016.
First-half revenue increased 9.2% to 91.09 billion yuan ($12.7 billion), and net income rose 8.9% to 45.4 billion yuan.
Wholesale prices for Moutai's flagship liquor, Feitian, have declined, hitting a record low.
China's government reminded officials to cut wasteful spending, potentially hurting liquor demand.
Moutai shares have fallen 5.7% this year, while the broader market has seen gains.
