Bombay HC Orders BMC to Compensate Kinara Fire Victims
A court in Mumbai, the Bombay High Court, has told the city's government, BMC, to pay money to the families of people who died in a hotel fire in 2015.
The court said the BMC was at fault for not making sure the hotel followed safety rules.
The hotel did not have the correct permits for fire safety, and the city government knew about problems but did not act on them.
The families of the people who died will now get a large payment.
Bombay High Court ordered BMC to pay ₹50 lakh each to families of eight victims of the 2015 Hotel Kinara fire.
The fire occurred on October 16, 2015, at Hotel City Kinara in Kurla, Mumbai.
Seven of the victims were students aged 18-20, and the eighth was a design engineer.
The court cited BMC's failure to take action despite knowing the hotel lacked fire safety permits and violated license conditions.
The hotel had operated a service area on the mezzanine floor, where the victims were seated when the fire broke out, and had stored prohibited gas cylinders.
