CIC penalizes officials for RTI violations
The Central Information Commission (CIC) has taken action against two officials for not following the rules of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
A senior official from the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) was given a notice because he gave conflicting information about a medicine.
The CIC said he was trying to mislead them by saying a generic medicine and a prescribed drug were the same.
The case started when a CGHS beneficiary filed an RTI application saying the medicine they needed was not given to them.
The CIC also fined a former official from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Rs 10,000 for delaying the information for two years.
The RTI applicant had asked about water bill payments and said the calculations were wrong.
The CIC said the official's responses were evasive and did not answer the questions properly.
The penalty has to be paid by February 27, 2026.
CIC issued a show-cause notice to a senior CGHS official for contradictory submissions regarding the receipt and issue of a prescribed medicine.
The CGHS official was accused of misleading the commission by claiming a generic medicine and a prescribed drug were the same.
CIC penalized a former DJB official Rs 10,000 for delaying information for nearly two years and providing evasive responses.
The RTI application was filed in October 2022, but a proper reply was only provided in September 2024 after the commission's intervention.
The commission directed CGHS to revisit several queries and provide records after invoking the severability clause under Section 10 of the RTI Act.
