India Watches US Bill for 100% Oil Tariffs
The United States Senate passed a bill that could let President Trump put very high taxes on countries that buy a lot of Russian oil, like India and China.
India says it is watching the bill closely and wants to keep its energy supply safe.
The bill would let the US change the taxes every six months if the buying habits change.
India’s foreign ministry said it will keep talking with the US about this.
The bill also names other countries that buy Russian oil, like Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan.
US Senate cleared bill allowing President Trump to impose up to 100% tariffs on India, China, and other major Russian oil buyers.
India says it is closely monitoring the bill and stresses its energy security priorities.
The bill targets five top Russian oil purchasers: India, China, Slovakia, Hungary, Azerbaijan.
The legislation would let the US reassess top purchasers every 180 days and adjust tariffs.
Indian External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India's engagement with US stakeholders on the issue.
