UGC Bans Psychology Degrees via Distance Learning
The UGC, which oversees universities in India, has stopped recognizing psychology degrees earned online or through distance learning.
This means that if you are currently getting your psychology degree this way, or plan to, it will no longer be valid after July 2025.
The government made this decision because a new law, the NCAHP Act, put psychology under a central regulator and introduced new standards for allied health courses like psychology.
Universities have been told to stop accepting new students in these programs.
Around 130,000 students and 57 universities are impacted by this decision, and students are now worried about their future careers and academic paths, while they wait for new guidelines.
The UGC will no longer recognize psychology degrees earned through distance or online education.
The order affects approximately 1.3 lakh students and 57 universities.
The decision stems from the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021.
Universities have been told to halt admissions for these programs.
Students who have completed degrees face uncertainty regarding their qualifications and career prospects.
