How Incel Slang Reached Campuses—and Carried Toxic Ideology
Some words that began in online incel communities are now being used by students and teenagers.
These include “mogging,” “pilled” and “looksmaxxing.”
At first, people may repeat them as jokes or ordinary slang.
But the words can still carry ideas from the communities where they began.
Researchers found that TikTok and YouTube Shorts sometimes recommend manosphere videos very quickly.
Watching one such video can lead to many more similar recommendations.
Looksmaxxing encourages people to judge faces and bodies using rankings created on internet forums.
Some people have hurt themselves by trying “bone smashing” to change their jaw shape.
Experts connect the broader trend with body dysmorphia and depression.
Linguist Adam Aleksic tracked rapid campus recognition of “maxxing,” “pilled” and “mogging” during 2024.
The terms originated in 4chan incel forums, where shared vocabulary signaled adherence to an ideology.
A Dublin City University study found TikTok and YouTube Shorts recommended manosphere content to new accounts within minutes.
Looksmaxxing uses anatomy-based language to rank facial features against forum-created standards.
Surgeons have documented serious injuries, including nerve damage, paralysis and blindness, linked to bone smashing.
- Who
- Linguist Adam Aleksic, researchers at Dublin City University, surgeons, and people engaging with incel-related slang and looksmaxxing.
- What
- Incel-forum vocabulary has spread into campus and teen slang, while associated online ideas have contributed to harmful body practices.
- When
- The vocabulary’s campus recognition was tracked from March to late 2024; the study cited was conducted in 2024.
- Where
- The terms originated on 4chan incel forums and spread through TikTok, YouTube Shorts, campuses, and teenage social-media feeds.
- Why
- Algorithms rapidly recommend manosphere content, while specialized language can carry the ideology and appearance standards of the communities that created it.
- Tracked campus recognition
- About 40% of students recognized the terms at a Georgetown lecture in March 2024, 80% at Stanford two months later, and all attendees at Oberlin four months after that.
- Original platforms
- The words trace back to 4chan incel forums.
- Recommendation speed
- In a Dublin City University study, new accounts received manosphere content within 2 to 17 minutes on YouTube Shorts and 9 to 15 minutes on TikTok.
- Content escalation
- After one such video was watched, 76% to 78% of recommendations had become manosphere or otherwise toxic content by two to three hours.
- Looksmaxxing
- The term describes an appearance-focused self-improvement branch of incel vocabulary.
- Bone smashing injuries
- Reported injuries include microfractures, nerve damage, facial paralysis, and at least one case of blindness.
- Expert concern
- A University of Toronto eating-disorder researcher linked the broader trend to body dysmorphia and depression.
