J&K Panchayat Polls Delayed Over Pending OBC Reservation

J&K Panchayat Polls Delayed Over Pending OBC Reservation

Jammu and Kashmir currently has no elected local councils.

The old village councils and other rural bodies finished their terms, but new elections have not been held.

One major reason is that the government must decide how many seats should be reserved for Other Backward Classes.

A commission studied this question and sent its report to the government.

The report still has to be considered by the Cabinet.

After that, the government must redraw some constituencies and set the reservation arrangements.

The election authorities say they are ready, but they need advance notice to organize voting.

Officials say elections should ideally happen before the harsh winter.

City and town elections face another delay because voter lists for assembly areas have not yet been updated.
