Protests Erupt Over Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls
People are protesting against a process called Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in India.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party says this process is a plan to take away citizenship from Dalits and minorities.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are protesting because they say the work is too much and is making them sick or even causing some to die.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) party in West Bengal also complains that the process is being done too quickly and not transparently.
Some people have even gone to the Supreme Court to ask for a stop to this process.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set a deadline of December 4, 2025, for this process to be completed.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) protested against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging it is a conspiracy to disenfranchise Dalits and minorities.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in West Bengal protested outside the Chief Electoral Officer's office, alleging excessive workload and deaths due to the SIR exercise.
Reports of BLO deaths have been reported in Kerala, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Lucknow.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) criticized the ECI for conducting the SIR in a rushed and opaque manner, calling it a potential pretext for deleting legitimate voters.
Multiple petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the SIR, with a hearing likely in the first week of December 2025.
