Delhi High Court Orders Nationwide Biometric Checks for GST Registrations
The Delhi High Court is worried that criminals are creating fake GST registrations.
They may use other people’s stolen or frozen PAN and Aadhaar details.
The court said GST authorities across India should use biometric Aadhaar checks before approving new registrations.
This order is temporary for now.
Officials reported thousands of suspicious registrations and large amounts of detected tax evasion.
The court said the problem can cost the government money and trouble innocent people.
Senior Advocate Tarun Gulati suggested additional checks, including facial recognition and short verification videos.
Authorities can still tell the court about any practical problems with using these measures.
The Delhi High Court directed GST authorities nationwide not to approve fresh registrations without biometric-based Aadhaar authentication.
The interim order was pronounced on September 8, 2026, and made public on September 10.
Authorities detected 2,800 fraudulent registrations and ₹15,085 crore in tax evasion during 2023–2024.
For 2024–2025, authorities detected 1,654 fraudulent registrations involving ₹13,109 crore in tax evasion.
The court asked authorities to consider facial recognition, video verification, data tracking, physical inspections, and real-time data sharing.
