Karnataka to Pay for Plastic Bottles, Launching Recycling Machines
Imagine getting money for your empty water bottles!
In Karnataka, starting on World Environment Day, you can put your plastic bottles into special machines and get Re 1 back for each one.
These machines will crush the bottles, and the KSPCB hopes this will make it easier for everyone to recycle.
The plan is to make the state free of plastic waste by giving people an incentive to recycle, and these machines will be placed in cities to help with that.
The machines themselves will be provided by a company that will profit from the recycled plastic.
Karnataka plans to install reverse vending machines (RVMs) to incentivize plastic bottle recycling.
Users will receive Re 1 for each plastic bottle deposited in an RVM.
The initiative aims to make Karnataka plastic-free, starting on World Environment Day, June 5.
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) is leading the project, inspired by a pilot program.
The RVMs will be provided and maintained by manufacturers, without cost to the government, which provides space for installation.
