Railways Must Pay Passenger After Theft in Reserved Coach

Railways Must Pay Passenger After Theft in Reserved Coach

Ajoy Kumar was travelling by train when two people entered his reserved coach and took his bag.

He said it held clothes, sarees and jewellery worth Rs 1.20 lakh.

Kumar complained to railway staff and later reported the theft to the police.

The case was eventually marked as untraced.

Northern Railway argued that Kumar had kept the bag in his own custody.

The consumer commission said the railway still had a duty to take reasonable steps to stop unauthorised people from entering the reserved coach.

It also noted that the railway did not provide records that could explain how the intruders got in.

The commission upheld an award of Rs 1.20 lakh, interest and Rs 25,000 compensation.
