India's Private Coal Power Firms Seek Easing of China Equipment Curbs

India's private companies that generate power from coal want to buy equipment from China.

The government currently requires them to use equipment made in India to support local manufacturing.

These companies say the Indian-made equipment is too expensive and not available quickly enough.

They've asked the government to let them import from China, which could make projects much cheaper.

Around 22 GW of private coal projects are stalled or may not start due to financial stress.

Allowing imports could solve these problems and help expand coal power production.

The government is currently considering this request.
