India's Unpaid Traffic Challan Gap Widens as Violations Surge

India's Unpaid Traffic Challan Gap Widens as Violations Surge

Traffic police in India are issuing many more tickets for traffic violations.

The number rose from 4.2 crore in 2021 to 9.6 crore in 2025.

However, more people are leaving their fines unpaid.

In 2026, about 82% of challans were still pending.

Uttar Pradesh had the most tickets and the largest amount of unpaid fines.

Many unpaid tickets are also sent to courts.

But courts are taking a long time to finish these cases.

The Supreme Court suggested stronger steps, including possibly linking unpaid e-challans to electricity bills.
