Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei rejects claim AI regulation concentrates power

Dario Amodei is the boss of a big company called Anthropic that makes artificial intelligence, or AI — computer programs that can think and learn.

Some people worry that AI could become very powerful, and they wonder who should control it.

A money expert named Gavin Baker said that if governments make too many rules for AI, the power over AI could end up with just a few companies and governments.

Mr. Amodei disagreed.

He said that rules, if made carefully, can actually keep big AI companies in check and give smaller companies a chance to grow.

He said we don't have to choose between rules and sharing AI — that's a "false choice."

Mr. Amodei likes rules that treat very big, powerful AI models more strictly than smaller ones.

He also thinks the real problem is that people don't trust AI companies, and that companies should earn that trust by doing good things rather than just talking.

So the two men disagree about whether making rules for AI is a good idea or a bad one.
