UK Introduces ETA for American Travelers
Starting in 2026, Americans and travelers from nearly 50 other countries will need to get a UK ETA before going to the UK.
This is like a digital permission slip that lets you travel to the UK for tourism, work, or even just passing through.
You apply online, pay a small fee, and wait for approval.
Once approved, it lasts for two years or until your passport expires.
If you don't have it, you might not be allowed to board your flight.
The UK is not the only place doing this; other countries like Australia and New Zealand already have similar systems.
Starting January 8, 2026, US citizens and travelers from nearly 50 other countries will need a UK ETA to enter or transit through the UK.
The ETA is a digital travel authorization similar to the US ESTA system, costing £16 and valid for two years or until passport expiry.
Most US passport holders will need an ETA unless they already have a UK visa, British or Irish passport, or legal residency in the UK or Republic of Ireland.
Travelers who stay inside the airport without passing through border control do not need an ETA, but those who leave the terminal or stay overnight will.
Airlines will deny boarding to travelers without an approved ETA after February 25, 2026, with a short grace period until then.
