Delhi Students Fear Unsafe Rentals After Satya Niketan Collapse
A building collapsed in Satya Niketan, Delhi, and seven people died.
Some of the people who died were students.
Other students living nearby are now worried that their buildings may not be safe.
Their parents are asking them to come home or move somewhere else.
Moving is difficult because the school term is already underway.
Nearby areas have cheaper rooms, but roads can flood and food choices are limited.
Delhi University has far fewer hostel rooms than students who need them.
Students must therefore choose between staying near campus, finding affordable housing, and feeling safer.
A five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on September 6, killing seven people, including students.
Students living nearby say they fear their rented buildings may also be unsafe, while parents urge them to return home or move.
Monthly rents in Satya Niketan typically range from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000, limiting students’ alternatives.
Students are exploring Vasant Gaon, Moti Bagh, Munirka, and Ber Sarai, where housing is cheaper but infrastructure and food options are weaker.
Delhi University’s affiliated-college hostels accommodate fewer than 7,000 students out of 251,474 regular students.
