ED's Conviction of 2 MLAs Under PMLA
Two MLAs from Jharkhand, Hari Narayan Rai and Enos Ekka, were convicted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
They were found guilty of using their positions to gain wealth illegally.
This case is important now because Parliament is looking at a new law that could remove leaders like the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers if they are arrested for serious crimes.
The Opposition is against this law, saying it could be used to remove leaders before they are proven guilty.
The ED has convicted very few politicians in the past decade, making this case significant.
Hari Narayan Rai and Enos Ekka were convicted under the PMLA for amassing illegal assets.
Rai was convicted in 2017 and Ekka in 2020, both receiving seven-year sentences.
The ED has charged 193 politicians in the past decade but secured only two convictions.
Parliament is scrutinizing the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which could remove leaders arrested for serious offenses.
The Opposition argues the bill could destabilize elected governments by removing leaders before guilt is proven.
