SYL Canal Deadlock Pits Punjab Water Fears Against Haryana Claims

SYL Canal Deadlock Pits Punjab Water Fears Against Haryana Claims

The Satluj-Yamuna Link, or SYL, is a canal meant to carry water from Punjab to Haryana.

Haryana says it should receive water because of an agreement made in 1981 and several court decisions.

Punjab says it does not have extra water and that its own farmers and villages are already facing shortages.

Many parts of Punjab are using groundwater faster than it can be replaced.

Haryana also says some of its districts have serious water problems.

The canal is unfinished because Punjab has not completed its section.

A tribunal is checking how much Ravi-Beas water is actually available today.

The two states may still need to find a political solution, even after the tribunal reports.
