ECI urges faster document checks in Bengal SIR
The Election Commission of India is worried because the process of checking documents from some voters in West Bengal is too slow.
These voters are called 'unmapped' because they couldn't be linked to the old voters' list.
The Commission has asked the local officials to work faster because they need to finish checking all the documents by February 14.
So far, they have checked documents for only a small number of these voters.
The Commission also reminded the officials that only certain documents are allowed as proof of identity.
They are doing this to make sure everyone who should be able to vote can do so.
ECI is concerned about the slow verification of documents by 'unmapped' voters in West Bengal.
The Commission has directed DMs and DEOs to expedite the document verification process.
The deadline for the final voters' list publication is February 14, 2024.
Out of 32 lakh unmapped voters, hearings have been completed for 29 lakh, but only 11 lakh documents have been uploaded.
Only 1 lakh voters' documents have been verified so far.
