Law Commission Approves One Nation One Election
The Law Commission of India, led by Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, has given the green light to the One Nation One Election (ONOE) plan.
They said it doesn't break any important rules of the Constitution and won't cause problems between the central and state governments.
The Commission also explained that the right to vote is not a fundamental right, so changing election times doesn't take away people's rights.
They added that the Election Commission already has the power to make these changes.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee has been talking to different groups to understand the idea better, but it's getting more complicated the deeper they go.
Law Commission Chairman Justice Dinesh Maheshwari presented the constitutional soundness of the One Nation One Election (ONOE) framework to the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
The Bill does not violate the Basic Structure of the Constitution or disrupt the federal balance.
The right to vote is a statutory right, not a fundamental right, so synchronizing electoral cycles does not infringe upon voters' rights.
Adjustments to parliamentary or state assembly tenures for synchronization are limited, reasonable, and within constitutional boundaries.
The ONOE proposal does not disturb the federal character, and state ratification is not required.
