Consumer Court Orders IndiGo to Pay Rs 25,000 for Spilling Hot Food
A man from Bengaluru was on an IndiGo flight from Bangkok to Bengaluru.
About 15 minutes after takeoff, a flight attendant opened an overhead bin, and a packet of hot non-vegetarian curry fell on him.
This made him uncomfortable and damaged his clothes and other things.
The airline said sorry and offered him a Rs 5,000 voucher, but he wanted more money.
He asked the court for Rs 5 lakh.
The court said the airline was responsible and made them pay Rs 25,000 to the man.
The airline had said the spill was not their fault, but the court disagreed.
The court said the airline should not have put hot, loose food in a place where it could fall on people.
This is not the first time IndiGo has been in trouble.
Last year, another court made them pay Rs 1.75 lakh to a woman who had a dirty seat on their flight.
A Bengaluru passenger was scalded by hot food spilled by a cabin crew member on an IndiGo flight from Bangkok to Bengaluru on March 5, 2024.
The passenger sought Rs 5 lakh in compensation, claiming distress and damage to personal items.
IndiGo offered a Rs 5,000 travel voucher but was found vicariously liable by the consumer court.
The court ordered IndiGo to pay Rs 25,000 in total compensation, including Rs 20,000 for the passenger and Rs 5,000 for litigation costs.
The court concluded that the airline's handling of hot items in overhead bins posed an avoidable risk to passenger safety.
