Bangladesh Requests India Extradite Sheikh Hasina After Death Sentence
Sheikh Hasina, who used to be the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and another former official were found guilty of very serious crimes during some protests last year.
A court in Bangladesh said they should be punished with death.
Now, the current government in Bangladesh is asking India to send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh to face this punishment.
India has said they will think about it carefully.
Bangladesh says it's important for India to follow the rules and send her back because they have a special agreement about this kind of thing.
Some experts also think India should do what Bangladesh is asking.
However, there are concerns about the political stability in Bangladesh and the rise of radical networks, which could affect the upcoming elections and regional security.
Bangladesh's interim government has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.
The request was made through a diplomatic note sent to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs shortly after the 7th National Security Advisers' meeting of the Colombo Security Conclave.
India has acknowledged the verdict and expressed commitment to engaging constructively with Bangladesh, but has not yet indicated its decision on the extradition request.
Bangladesh argues that the extradition is obligatory under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries and that granting shelter to the convicted individuals would be a grave act of unfriendly conduct.
Security analysts suggest that India should honor Bangladesh's legal processes and cooperate with the extradition request, as the trial met international standards and legal systems.
