Subhash Chandra clarifies ₹22,000 crore personal guarantee controversy

Subhash Chandra said he did not personally borrow ₹22,000 crore.

He said that number refers to guarantees he gave for loans taken by companies.

A guarantee means he could become responsible if those companies do not repay.

According to his statement, the companies originally borrowed ₹4,808 crore.

They had already repaid ₹3,803 crore, leaving about ₹998 crore from the original borrowing.

However, lenders filed larger claims of ₹5,311 crore in his insolvency case.

Chandra said ₹1,049 crore of those claims was later settled or paid.

He said borrowers promised to settle the remaining ₹4,262 crore and asked for an independent audit.
