Tripura Tribal Village Committee Polls Set Political Battle
Tripura will hold elections for local village committees in its tribal areas.
These committees are similar to village councils in other parts of the state.
The elections will take place on September 28, after no such election was held for 10 years.
Several political parties are preparing to compete.
The BJP and CPI(M) are holding strategy meetings, while Congress, IPFT and Tipra Motha are also preparing.
Nearly 962,000 people can vote.
The Tipra Motha Party currently controls the larger tribal council.
Officials say security will be arranged so the elections can happen peacefully.
Elections for 4,597 seats across 587 Village Committees will be held on September 28 after a 10-year gap.
The constituencies fall within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, which covers nearly two-thirds of Tripura.
